A fantastic amalgam of eclectic references and insights as per usual Justin! Had the privilege of seeing Oliveros perform once -- arranged by her former lover and art collaborator Linda Montano -- and I love reading her writings and listening to her recordings. Donna Tartt video by Milhaus/Matt is excellent and kind of mesmerising. Reminds me a little of the use of Alan Watts' voice sampled in various electronic/house tracks, and she has a passing resemblance to the Audrey Horne character (actress Sherilyn Fenn) in Twin Peaks! Nice comment about communing with the aunties, a young artist friend of mine has called the octogenarian artists she's befriended or interviewed "war veterans" -- the avant-garde wars.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read, Martin. I really appreciate it. I love her music and writing as well... so neat you got to see her perform. I will have to check out Linda Montano. I really like that kind of cut-up style, so I was immediately taken... and Donna Tartt has an amazing voice. She read her own book for the audio version of The Secret History, which was really great to listen to, as was the western True Grit, which she also narrated. I can see the Audrey Horne connection! That's so neat your young friend is talking to the elders and the vets!
Well said, Justin, and cheers for the citation! I spent a LONG time listening to that interview, and then patching together tiny fragments of her speech.
When I first saw your video over on Gioia’s open mic I was gutted by it in the best possible way. I’ve always loved her voice, and her writing of course. Your work with it and all she says about stories resonated powerfully with me and I wanted to share it with other people. I really love cut-ups, plunderphonics, and that kind of work as well, so … I think it’s a wonderful piece.
I plan to play it on a local radio show I fill in for on May 23rd. Thanks again for making this piece.
I have an acquaintance who is a pediatrician. I told him that I often watch movies more than once. He said that is a behavior of children with autism. And then added “not judging” soon after that.
I’m still not quite sure what to make of that comment by him. But there are a few books I want to re read.
Stewart Brand, right? I know of it, but I havent read the book. I need to give Steaphenson another shot. I’ll be honest: I didn’t make it all the way through Cryptonomicon. I guess I was’t patient enough ; )
I have a hardcover of The Diamond Age, been meaning to read that and Snow Crash. I heard good things of Anathema.

The deep listening cd by Oliveros and Stuart Dempster is a beauty!
Indeed! I love Stuart Dempster’s album Underground Overlays In the Cistern Chapel.

Strange comment coming from a pediatrician. I feel like you only know a work on one level until it has been rewatched, reread or relistened to.
The things we spend that much time with really inform our minds.
Yeah, I was taken aback a bit. But sadly it stuck in my head.
That Charlie Rose video is great! I feel the medium has a say in slowness. Can we slowly consume TikTok?
Agreed. One of the strengths of subslack is it does support long form reads and readers.
Matt Popes video gutted me when I first saw it. I am a big fan of Donna Tartt.
Do you know the “Long Now” foundation? It inspired Neal Stephenson book Anathema. They built a clock that will last 10,000 years.
I like the idea, but it is also someone in bed with Silicon Valley tech people in an odd mix up that is San Francisco.
Anyway, at its core, it’s about stretching time and slowing down.

But I get it about Nrand and SF…
I think Anathema was one of the last I liked. Steward Brand yeah.
